New Beginnings Stats

First off, never in my life did I think I would write something with the word "stats" in it.  Though Pre-Stats was the only math class that I got a B in since 5th grade.  No joke.  Math is hard guys.

Okay, so Mondays are stats days.  However, I don't have a tremendous amount of stats to share today, just some starting points, and next week the progress can be shown a little better.

Here's a little bit about my projects first.  So, I am working on 2 projects:

Haunted House (as it will be called here) and
Haunted Hotel (as it will be called here).  I know, they don't sound very original, but for now simplicity is good.

The Haunted House project I started back in October and I wrote quite a bit...but then grad school got crazy and I tucked it away for like 3 months.  During that 3 months I revised my outline, and while I didn't have to scrap the whole thing, I definitely am not just jumping in where I left off.  So I'm going through chapter by chapter, revising what I can.  Scrapping a lot.

The Haunted Hotel piece will be "published" online on wattpad. I'll link when its up.  I want to get a few chapters ahead before I start posting chapters.

Chapter Length Goals:
Haunted House: 2000-2500 words a chapter
Haunted Hotel: 1000-1500 words a chapter

Something else I will be noting here is whether or not my word counts are for handwritten or typed drafts.

I am suuuper old school and still hand write everything.  I count my words as I go and when I finish a chapter I then type it up.  Sometimes between hand written and typed drafts the word counts will differ either from my inability to count (remember the math is hard thing?) or because I tend to make small edits as I type up my handwritten drafts.

Right now, my goal is to just write write write.  My numbers should go up each week, not down.  I'm saving editing for a little later.

So here is where we are starting.

Haunted House: 2164 words.  Chapter 1 handwritten draft is done.
Next Goal:  Type up Chapter 1. Pick out the things from old chapter 2 that I want to keep, and work on re-writing the rest of chapter 2.

Haunted Hotel: 927 words.  Almost done with handwritten draft of chapter 1.
Next Goal: Finish handwritten draft of Chapter 1 and then type it up.  Start Chapter 2

Next Monday, you'll get a glimpse of what I did each day (words written.  Exercises done. etc.)  This will help me to see what my most productive days are, and what days I need to step up my game.

That's all  for now.  I'll update you all next week!

OH!  My writing based post will be on Thursday this week instead of Friday.  Someone at my work is retiring and I'll be attending the retirement party, so it will come a day early.

Book Review: The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne

Okay there are so many places I want to take this post, and I'm not sure where I want to start, so I'll just start with cover art and a quick summary of the book: This story focuses on the adventures of 5 Americans on an uncharted island.  It starts during the American Civil War, where 5 northern prisoners of war decide to escape by hijacking an air balloon. After flying through a storm for several days, they finally land on some unknown island. They name it "Lincoln Island" as tribute to their president, Abraham Lincoln. The five are able to sustain themselves on the island, producing fire, pottery, bricks, nitroglycerin (!), iron, an electric telegraph (!) a cliff side home, and even a seaworthy ship. Throughout their time on the island, there seems to be a deus ex machina at work, delivering chests of goods and rescuing them when in danger. Eventually, they find out the secret of the island and the gifts. Captain Nemo.  Yes, that Captain Nemo from 20,000...

Freaky Flash Fiction Friday: "Form B"

Form B "So, is this treatment going to be painful?" Moira asked. "There is a very mild discomfort." Dr. Webb said, leaning back in his office chair. It creaked under his weight. "Some say it is like  slight burning sensation." He smiled. "It's nothing you have to concern yourself with." Moira had been seeing Dr. Webb for the last 6 months for treatment for her eczema. She had spent thousands of dollars on other doctors, creams, and homeopathic remedies all to no avail. Dr. Webb had contact her on a web forum. She was part of a message board community for people with skin conditions. He told her that he could cure her. And he had. His method was a combination of medicated baths, pills, ointments and even meditation.  Her skin was glowing. She couldn't remember the last time her skin was this clear.  Today was her final session. A heat treatment. She wasn't sure exactly how it was supposed to help, but Dr. Webb had ...

52 Dates for Writers #1: Cook Something Luxurious

The first date in the "52 Dates for Writers" book has us "Cook Something Luxurious" Although food doesn't play a major role in my novel, the setting sort of forces me to think about it.  My novel takes place in the "ambiguous south" (or at least the South is a major influence) and food plays a huge role in Southern living. My novel isn't some extravagant adventure story that is going to take my characters into far off lands, it takes place in one little neighborhood in the humble homes of my characters. My characters are middle class. Both parents work, kids go to public school, very similar to my own growing up.  Meals aren't multi-course, fine china events, but they are cooked with love and enjoyed around the table. And while my novel doesn't take my characters on grand external adventures, they sure go on some extreme internal ones. My MC is going to go on an emotional adventure, and it is imperative that my other characters notice...
